well as we know the vote takes place on Wednesday to determine who will host the olimpics in 2012. It is reckoned that it is between London and Parris, however, parris have this week annoyed the delegates somewhat by putting up posters all over singapore saying they've won, when, in actual fact, they haven't as yet. Although it has been almost assumed that Paris will win the vote, do we brits still dare to hope that we might be able to overtake the french?
I hope we don't get the olynmpics. The government should be sopending the money on us not some sporting event which just about lasts a month or so.
but think of the revenue that it will bring. Yes people will come over here for the olimpics but they will also travel to other parts of the country while they are over here. and where's the national pride! sure london is the olimpic city, but it is still in this country!
for me one of the most important aspects of getting the games would be the development of better sporting facilities which, in the long term, can only be good for our nations sporting talent!
plus imagine having such a great sporting event right here on our doorsteps. it would be great to go and be a part of something like that!
i'm all in favor! go London!
yeah bring it on! and I'll be first in line for tickets!
Your right and what's more, Britain doesnt bloody well deserve it, our sporting talent is squandered by inadquate funding and disability sport is always the biggest loser...
oh let's not get back up on our disability high horse. it's true that our disabled athletes are not as well funded as the non disabled athletes, however at least the paralympics gets a mention in this country. when the olympics were on in sydney and athens, the states bearly covered the paralympics.
so apparently goblin's answer to the problem of under funding is to throw the toys out of the pram and completely ignore sport and all of its major events! well that's very constructive!
apparently local councils in England and Wales aren't spending enough on the up keep of roads! so lets completely get rid of roads and go back to walking everywhere! o and the average reading age of children in this country isn't high enough either so why not burn all the books! at least that way everybody can be equally as stupid!
having the Olympic games coming to this country can only be a good thing! after all it stands to reason that we are going to want to have a successful Olympics if it is right here on our turf and the only way to ensure that is with more funding!
so goblin your point is not only non constructive but it is also nonsensical!
Okay, me as I'm not from England, I am sure that you can hope. Personally I don't like France that much as England but that's not the subject of the topic. I am sure you have a good chance.
Lol as the previous voting went, Germany was out of chances. Doesn't matter, we already host the football european championship 2006, and I would visit London if the olympic games were there.
And so might the anarchist anti-capitalist protestors as the olymics is less about athletic achievement and more about money, Greece is still paying for Athens 2005, and will be for quite some time...
I'm not from England either but it would be so cool if you guys got to hoast it!!! The English sports will really benefit from this event and I wish I was old enough to go when the U.S. Hoasted the elimpics!!! Go England!!!

well as new york appear to be out of the running you US peeps can cheer for us! grin.
Goblin that's true though, all these sports- and music-events are more about money than about anything else.
No it’s not just about money, it’s about the opportunity to compete for your country! If it was just about money, we wouldn’t see athletes from the obscurest parts of the world competing, in the hope that they can make a name for themselves in the international sporting arena. And think about what this will do for sporting youth over here. If we are successful, then every young person in this country will want to go out there and find a sport that he/she is good at, in the knowledge that he/she might be able to compete in an Olympic games in his/her own country in 2012! All these nay sayers who say we shouldn’t do it have no sense of pride in their country. I say go London! We have a fantastic bid! Let’s hope the vote goes in our favour!
That's the point though: It is about all, but it should be about sports, about competition, about seing many sportsmen and women from all countries doing their best.
and that's exactly what it's about. of course money has to be spent to make it happen, but it will bring a tremendous amount of revenue to this country, and it will have a positive impact on sport in this country, and if we win the bid, in 2012, we will be on the international stage, and those sportsmen and women will be doing their best at what they do, in our country!
well madrid, moscow and new york were iliminated in the first three rounds of voting so now it's between us and parris! go london we have to do it!
You know!!! I'm really all for this event!!! Yes, a lot of money has to be put in it, but in the end, it's the best for the country!!! Go sports!!!

There are advgantages to getting the olympics, however in answer to the point about better sporting facilities, they'll all be in london which is hardly of any use to people from Abadeen. The olympics would have greater bhenefits if they were hosted in the UK rather than just London. Tourists will still come to other parts of the country regardless of whether we have the olympics or not too. SB is right about people wanting to take up sports though. The amount of people like this will increase. This will be good because we'll have better-behaved healthier people who will achieve more academically as well as in sport and crime will also go down. I don't think that as a country we're good at making full use of things. LOok at what happened with the Millennium dome. Brilliant venue, but not used to its full potential. As For disability sports, well they don't diserve as much funding as they don't generate as much interest and they never will. Sighted people participating in sports will always be more appealing to sighted people than blind people participating in sports. That's just natural. I've watched blind football and to be honest, it's not exactly blind football when there's a sighted goaly is it? No football match involving two blind teams will ever attract 60000 spectators therefore obviously blind football doesn't deserve so much money obviously.
well now what is there left to be said! we did it! and the 2012 olympics will be hosted in London!
You ignorant eegit disability sport attracts a huge following the crowds in the paralympics were huge ...the main problem with D.S is the scandalous lack of support and promotion..if more D.S was televised instead of bloody football I'd be a very happy man.
the fact remains though, that disability sport does not consistently attract the kinds of crowds that sports such as football do. it's a fact, it's not ignorance. yes the paralympics attracted huge crowds but that only happens once every 4 years, you would not consistently get crowds like that watching disability sport every week. but we're digressing from the topic now so I think the celebrations should continue that we got the games! yay!
That's true, but still it attracts people.
I am glad that lOndon did it!!!! Very glad!!!! I will be there ,that is for certain.
Yay, go London! My congratulations. In response to Goblin's topic, the UK has the second best disabillity sports funding, behind Spain (onsa has a disproportionate amount of money since they control the Spanish lotery), their disability sports people are really good, their swimmers are taking over many categories at the olympics and they are the biggest bounce back countries I ever witnessed. Having participated in two parallympic games personally I can say that it's a truly inspiring thing for disabled people to be able to aspire to competing there. And I also completely understand why disabled people don't get the same funding, they train less (on average) than their sighted partners, the competition to get in is much less fearse, the limits and standards for performance are lower and they move more slowly. Goblin would prefer watching Formula 1 racing to regular street car racing, why, because the f1 cars go faster and the difference between first and last participant can be seconds, I leave it up to you to look up sports results from the last parallympic games in Australia and find how many second separated the medalists in e.g. 400 freestyle class s6 or s7 or s8 or 200 brest stroke, do the same thing for sighted swimmers and then tell me which competition looks to be more exciting to watch. I think the standards are going up really really fast in disabled sports and there has been a true increase in enthusiasm the disabled sports generate and I think as the standards go up this trned will continue, but to expect disabled people to get the same funding as their non disabled partners is just ridiculous, if they're good enough they will be able to compete in the non disabled category, e.g. there was a Hungarian guy who was 400 medley at the regular olypmics in 1988 and 1992 and I believe he made it as a medalist in 1996 and he was legally blind. I think the whole disability funding issue, sure, is one to look at but goblin's claims, as always go way beyond anything reasonable.
OH yeah I heard about the Spanish disability sports funding. I only know one German participant of the winter paraolympics 2002, she won all the medals she could in Biathlon.
